MINNEAPOLIS — Local leaders say they’re concerned that intoxicated boating and inadequate patrols are compromising safety on Lake Minnetonka.

First responders were inundated with calls during the July 4th holiday weekend. Authorities responded to 75 calls on the popular lake, including 17 alcohol-related medical calls, including one man who suffered a spinal cord injury after diving into shallow water on Cruiser’s Cove.

Hennepin County’s water patrol had help from Excelsior, Long Lake and St. Bonifacius. Long Lake Assistant Fire Chief John Hall says first responders did the best they could with all the calls, including a woman who was cut by a boat propeller and unconscious intoxicated boaters.
