Austin Greyhounds get past the Austin Blue Sox

The Austin Greyhounds had a dominant start and they were able to finish the Austin Blue Sox off with a 13-6 win in Marcusen Park Friday night.
The Hounds (10-7 overall) had their first seven runners reach base in the top of the first inning as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead. The Hounds pushed their lead to 8-3 in the top of the third when Joe Huffman singled in a run and later scored on a double steal. It was Huffman’s first stolen base in his amateur baseball career that began in 2005.

“We came out ready,” Hounds manager Matt Cano said. “Right from start we had good at-bats. We had pitches we were able to hit and we didn’t try to do too much with them. It’s always nice when you start with a four run cushion.”
Nik Gasner gave the Hounds a little more momentum in the top of the fourth when he launched a solo homer over the left field fence to make it 9-3.
“I knew I hit it pretty well right away, but I didn’t know I hit it that well until it went out,” Gasner said. “We just want to get on a roll, we played pretty bad last game and we made a lot of errors. Playing the Blue Sox, we always want to beat them. I like playing against the Blue Sox and everybody else does too and that gives us enough motivation to win the game.”
It was a long night for the Blue Sox (6-9 overall) as they went through four pitchers and committed eight errors in the loss.
The Hounds leaned on the pitching of Weston Hansen, who picked up the win, and Zach Schara, who closed the door.
“It was hot and humid and Weston was outside all day. He gutted his way through five and Schara pitched a nice four innings,” Cano said. “It was good execution from our pitchers and our defense feeds off that.”
