A 27-year-old Stewartville man was arrested Wednesday after a standoff at his home lasted for more than two and a half hours.

Richard Jordan allegedly threatened to shoot and kill his girlfriend, and had two loaded guns — a shotgun and a .22-caliber rifle — inside his home, according to Mower County Sheriff Terese Amazi.

An area utility company reported Jordan’s victim shouted over the phone that he was trying to kill her at about 11 a.m. From there, Mower and Olmsted county deputies set up a perimeter around Jordan’s house at the 76500 block of Mower-Olmsted Road.

Deputies found the victim safe outside the house. Jordan wasn’t home, however.

Amazi said Jordan led deputies to believe he was still inside when he actually snuck out the back door with his mastiff dog, ran through a corn field and went to a neighbor’s house before law enforcement arrived.

Jordan gave himself up to deputies at about 1:30 p.m.

He was taken to the Mower County jail on terroristic threat and assault charges. His case has been forwarded to the Mower County Attorney’s office.
