Stitching up a cure; Quilt for a Cure returns to raise money for Lyle Area Cancer

An upcoming Lyle Area Cancer event is looking to sew and quilt its way to a cancer cure.
Quilt for a Cure will hold its third annual quilters retreat from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Carpenter, Iowa, Community Center.
The quilting retreat gives attendees time to work on their latest quilt, and several people will work on a group quilt to be sold at the Lyle Area Cancer Auction in January. The event also features a silent auction, a quilt supplies garage sale, door prizes and food. Organizers also pick a queen for the retreat.
“We have hopefully some fun things,” organizer Marge Nelson said. “There’s always lots of food to eat.”
The first year raised $2,600 and the second raised $4,200 for Lyle Area Cancer.
“We’re hoping we can get a little more than that this year,” Nelson said.
Nelson got the idea for the event after seeing scrapbooking group Crop for the Cure present a check at the auction about four years ago. Then, Nelson’s husband, Roger, was diagnosed with cancer and she started Quilt for a Cure. Roger, a retired farmer, is doing well.
Cost is $60 to attend both days or $40 to attend one day. About 30 quilters can attend, but others are invited to come and bid on auction and sale items.
“They can come down and check us out, see what’s going on,” Nelson said.
