Mower County is making some improvements to its highway department.

The Mower County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday approved moving forward with a planned addition to the highway department building at 1105 Eighth Ave. NE in Austin.

Workers will convert one of the department’s garage stalls into two offices for additional staff. In addition, the building will get new employee-safety customer counters which will include glass fronts, an expanded fire sprinkler system into the new office space, and a concrete repaving of its front to comply with American Disability Act standards, according to County Coordinator Craig Oscarson.

The project is estimated at $83,000 and will be put out to bid among construction companies.
