The Austin volleyball team was almost in position to win its first Big Nine match since 2011, but it couldn’t finish the match as it lost to Mankato West (2-3 overall, 1-2 Big Nine) in four games.
The Packers lost 21-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-9 in Packer Gym Tuesday.
Austin (2-7 overall, 0-2 Big Nine) trailed the third game 24-17 and it came back to tie it up at 24-24, but the Scarlets scored the last two points to move within one win of taking the match. The Packers struggled out of the gates in the fourth game and never got back in it.
“We had a great effort in the first three games,” Austin head coach Cindy Owen said. “They battled and we fought back in the third game. I think losing it kind of took the wind out of our sails. We just need to finish.”
Ashley Hawkshead had 12 kills and six blocks for the Packers and Shayley Vesel had 21 set assists and seven kills.
Austin stats: Shayley Vesel, 7 kills, 21 set assists, 9 points, 4 blocks; Ashley Hawkshead, 12 kills, 6 blocks, 9 points serving; Amber Hansen, 5 kills, 5 blocks; Kelsey Sederquest, 34 digs; Lauryn Bell, 10 digs; Abi Collins, 5 blocks
