The Austin girls soccer team (0-2-1 overall, 0-2-1 Big Nine) overcame a rough first half to tie Winona 2-2 at Art Hass Stadium Thursday night.
The Packers scored last to tie the game when Rachel Sherman sent up a long shot from the side of the net that just cleared the goal keeper’s hand while landing right next to the bar.
“It was a great shot,” Austin head coach Mark Raymond said. “All in all we played a good game and the girls are coming along nicely.”
Sherman set up Austin’s first goal when she crossed a pass to Laine Hicks on the far side of the net, where she beat the keeper for a score.
“Rachel Sherman and Tina Vorphal did a nice job transitioning the ball from the middle of the field to the outside edge where they were successful in finding running room to the corners,” Raymond said.
Winona (0-4-1 overall) scored its second goal on when Taylor Yess knocked one in.
Winona dominated the first half, but it only scored once in the first 40 minutes when Kaylee Gunnell scored on a rebound off a stretching one handed save by Austin goalie Maing Garcia.
The Packers started to show signs of life before halftime.
“The half finished with us beginning to show signs of improved play,” Raymond said. “We started to possess the ball and string together three and four pass combination instead of trying to match the long ball tactics of Winona.”
