The Austin girls soccer team didn’t let an early penalty get in its way as it won 2-1 at Red Wing (6-5-1 overall, 2-5-1 Big Nine) Thursday.
The Packers (6-5 overall, 3-4 Big Nine) committed an early hand ball penalty that allowed the Wingers to take a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick. But Austin had an answer when junior Christina Hernandez scored her first varsity goal to tie the game at 1-1 and freshman Chloe Sheehan scored her first varsity goal to put Austin up for good with 10 minutes left in the first half.
“The beautiful thing is the girls supported the girl who made the mistake [on the penalty],” Austin head coach Enrique Camarena-Corzo said. “For me it’s a double win because they backed up that player. We played beautiful with good scoring and good passing.”
Myia Hoium stopped seven of the shots she saw to get the win in net and the Packers had five shots on goal.
