The Austin girls soccer team finished off their best regular season in at least a decade when they blanked Bryon (8-8 overall) 1-0 in Art Hass Stadium Saturday.
Austin senior Jora Bothun scored her first career goal in the first half for the Packers (8-7-1 overall) and Maya Hoium made eight saves in net to preserve the win. Bothun had played keeper and defense in the past and she said it was a great feeling to finally put one in the back of the net.
Her score came on a shot from 30 yards out.
“I was looking for it. I’ve been wanting it this whole season and I was pushing myself. I wasn’t even thinking about playing this year, but it’s all coming together now and I’m really glad I did,” Bothun said. “It was a good end to my senior season. It shows how connected we are as a team. We don’t play as individuals, we play together and this moment captured that.”
The Packers fired 11 shots on goal in the win and they had a couple of close looks that could’ve extended their lead to two goals. As it was, Bothun’s goal was a big one.
Austin head coach Enrique Camarena-Corzo said Bothun has improved in practice and on game days this season.
“She’s worked really hard in practice and finally she got a goal to go. She believed in herself one hundred percent,” he said.
The Packers will open the Section 2A tournament as a No. 7 seed and they will host No. 10 Faribault 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The Packers beat the Falcons 1-0 Sept. 10 and they’re hoping to get another win to keep the season alive.
“We have to look at short term goals and long term goals,” Camarena-Corzo said. “Winning Tuesday is our first goal because if we can’t win that one, it’s over. Our biggest goal is always to win state and that’s our mentality. It is hard, it’s not easy but if we don’t have that goal I’m not coaching.”
