GRAND MEADOW — Grand Meadow senior Rio Landers and LeRoy-Ostrander senior Sam Siskow have been battling at the net for the past four years whenever the Cardinals and Superlarks face off in a rivalry match.

Monday may have been the last meeting between the two standouts on the volleyball court and they each played a big role for their teams, but it was Landers’ squad that won this one as GM hung on by scores of 25-20, 15-25, 9-25, 25-14, 15-12.

The final set was tied at 11-11 before GM (15-14 overall, 8-4 SEC) pulled away.

The big matchup almost never even happened on Monday as GM experienced a power outage that put the match in question. When the lights finally came on, both teams rushed through their warm-ups.

“It was a really weird night,” Landers said. ” Half of us had the mindset that we wouldn’t be playing because of the power outage and it was LeRoy, which is always a weird match. It doesn’t matter where we are in the conference, it’s always a good match [with LO]. We were nervous.”

Landers finished with 17 kills and six blocks and Siskow had 25 kills. Landers and Siskow know each other away from the court as well and they have always been pumped up to play against each other.

“Sam always makes me nervous. We’ve been going head to head at middle hitter since freshman year and it’s flip flopped every year with who wins,” Landers said. “We know each other off the court and it’s more of a friendly rivalry. It really feels like it’s the end of an era.”

Siskow relished her match ups with Landers and she always gets pumped up to play the Larks.

“It’s going to be really different,” Siskow said. “I always try to talk to Rio and it makes me more competitive. I’m definitely going to miss playing her in volleyball.”

The Cardinals (9-15 overall, 3-9 SEC) looked to be in control of the match when they won set four 25-9 to move within one win of a victory. But LO wasn’t able to get much of a lead in the fourth or fifth sets.

“When we don’t make mistakes and don’t make service errors we feel like we’re a good team,” LO head coach Joe Kuechenmeister said. “Our achilles heel has been those unforced errors and we unfortunately made a few of those errors. I’m not trying to discredit Grand Meadow whatsoever. They’ve got a very nice team this year and they’ve had a lot of success, but against a team like that you can’t give free points away.”

GM stats: Rio Landers 17 kills, 6 blocks, 4 aces; Jordyn Glynn, 12 kills, 19 digs; Alexandra Lubahn, 34 set assists; Brittanie Winfield, 5 blocks; Kaitlyn Hilton, 10 digs

LO stats: Sam Siskow, 25 kills; Haley Hungerholt, 8 kills, 2 aces; Kate Helgeson, 19 assists; Mariah O’byrne, 7 aces
