Included in the Community Learning Center’s vast curriculum of classes, workshops and activities is a new addition: the “Reading and Math Clinic.”

The class will be held at Riverland Community College from 3:30 to 4:40 p.m. Monday through Thursday beginning Sept. 15.

“It’s basically to help people to brush up on math and reading,” said Janice Mino, Adult Learning Program coordinator. “I anticipate we’ll have students who are thinking about going on to college, but may not be at the level that colleges require.”

Dennis Schwab from the Adult Learning Program will teach the course, with the first term beginning Sept. 15.

Students must be at least 16 years old and not enrolled in high school to participate in the Reading and Math Clinic, Mino said.

“It’s really a transition to post-secondary, and for people who want to get their GED,” she explained. “If someone is wanting to get a promotion, maybe they can use it as leverage.”

At the conclusion of the class, students will receive a certificate.

The class is free.

Registration takes place Tuesday through Thursday from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at the Riverland Admissions Office in the East Building.

English Language Learning classes

Registration is underway for English Language Learning classes at the CLC.

“We still have a lot of openings,” Mino said.

CLC provides four levels of ELL classes, and students are tested to gauge ability.

Classes begin immediately and run through Nov. 20.

To register, go to Room 05 at the CLC. The fee is $15 for books.

Family Learning classes

Family Learning at the CLC is currently full, but openings may be available later in the fall, Mino said.

“We were full from last year, so many people come back,” Mino said. “It’s just such a good program because their children can be in preschool and daycare and kindergarten while their moms are learning English, so we scholarship a lot of those children in.

“We always have openings by Thanksgiving,” she said.

GED education

Enrollment is continuous for GED education, available mornings and evenings year-round.

According to Mino, from January through December 2007, 77 people took the GED test through the CLC; 55 of those completed the entire test battery and 47 of those achieved high enough scores to be credentialed. The 85 percent passing rate is 2 percent higher than the state average.
