Kelly Nesvold is looking to get a start on his fundraising project to raise money to fight human trafficking through a 300-mile triathlon, a project he’s dubbed 300M4Freedom.
Nesvold and other volunteers will host a Pizza Ranch tip night Monday from 4 p.m. to close, and a Hy-Vee roundup is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 21.
All funds raised will go to Mission 21 out of Rochester and Out of Ashes in Nepal to fight human trafficking.
“I have two small girls and a son. What most people don’t realize is that human trafficking is now the largest form of organized crime in terms of making money,” Nesvold said. “It’s becoming huge and the idea of selling other people to make money is unfathomable to me. You feel like you ought to do as much as you can.”
The event at Hy-Vee in November will be geared toward people shopping for Thanksgiving.
“We’re hopeful that we’ll be able to do some fun things,” Nesvold said.
Nesvold is planning to complete the equivalent of a 300-mile triathlon from Grand Rapids to Austin in August of 2016 for the big fundraiser.
He is continuing to train for the triathlon, which will start with a 5-mile swim across Pokegama Lake in Grand Rapids, a 240-mile bike through the metro area, and a 55-mile run through Faribault and to Austin.
Last year, Nesvold ran 100 miles from St. Paul to Austin to buy 100,000 meals for children overseas through his 100M4Hunger project.
