The city of Austin is going back to the drawing board for its work on the Third Avenue Northeast plaza near the new Spam Museum.

The city had opened bids for work on a concrete sidewalk, planters, bike racks, garbages and seating in a gathering space outside the new museum. But the city is now going to wait after the lone bid for the work exceeded the budget by about $145,000.

The Austin City Council denied a $329,338.30 bid Monday for the work. Its budget on the project was $184,295. The work is being funded through a Hormel Foundation grant.

“The bid was outside of our range for the budget on this project, and we will look at revisiting the project scope this winter and still meet the original completion date,” Public Works Director Steven Lang said.

The city will rework the project and seek new bids over the winter. The plan is still to complete the project by June 1.
