The Austin girls basketball team used a late rally to pick up a 43-31 win over Faribault (0-1 overall, 0-1 Big Nine) on the road Tuesday.
Austin (1-0 overall, 1-0 Big Nine) trailed 29-25 with seven minutes left in the game, when it used an 18-2 run to close out the game.
“We got running, which we we had talked to the girls about trying to do. The kids were playing real good defense,” Austin head coach Todd Johnson said. “We have kids back, but it takes a little bit to gel sometimes. It’s almost like a relief after you win that first game. You want to get started on a win. It wasn’t pretty, but it was a grind it out win and we’re very excited about how we played at the end.”
Shayley Vesel led the Packers with 12 points.
Austin scoring: Shayley Vesel, 12; Ashley Hawkshead, 8; Ruth Koang, 8; Amber Hansen, 7; Awenia Nywesh, 4; Rebecca Younis, 4; free throws: 11-for-25
