Vikings drop football opener to Stewartville

The Hayfield football team opened its season with a 20-12 loss at Stewartville Friday night.
The Vikings trailed by just 13-6 in the fourth quarter when Stewartville’s Tom Gisler hauled in a 34-yard scoring strike from Steve Jezeski to put the game out of reach.
Hayfield outgained Stewartville on the ground 193 to 173 and passed for 138 yards, while Stewartville passed for just 96. But Hayfield QB Evan Bungum threw three costly picks in the loss while Stewartville avoided turnovers.
The Vikings also won the time of possession battle as they had the ball for almost 10 minutes more than the Tigers.
