A strong stink persists in a 58-year-old Austin woman’s vehicle after she drove through a pig manure spill near Sergeant while en route to Rochester Thursday, according to Mower County Sheriff Terese Amazi.

Amazi said the woman was traveling in the northbound lane of 630th Avenue around 4:30 p.m. when she encountered the manure, which stretched 60-70 feet and completely covered her lane. Because of oncoming traffic, the woman told police she was force to drive through it.

The spillage came from a contractor pumping holding pits from a nearby hog farm, according to Amazi.

The contractor was emptying the last pit when the manure overflowed to the road, she said, adding that he returned soon later to clean the area.

But not before the woman drove through it. Quick efforts to clean the car in Rochester proved futile, the sheriff said.
