Girls hockey: Overby stops 48 shots, but Packers fall to Anoka

Austin senior goalie Mara Overby put forth a huge effort, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Packer girls hockey team lost to Anoka 2-0 on the second day of their Holiday tournament in Riverside Arena Tuesday.
Overby stopped 48 of the 50 shots she saw in net and the only two goals the Tornadoes (9-5-2 overall) scored came during power plays.
“I thought that was probably her best game in three years,” Austin head coach Brett Vesel said. “She was on, she was focused and she stopped some tough shots.”
Austin (6-6 overall) had just 18 shots in the loss, but 12 of those shots came in the third period. Myia Hoium nearly put the Packers on the board as she put up a couple of quality shots early in the third period, but Austin couldn’t get on the board as it was shutout for the first time this season.
The Packers were out-shot 38-8 in the first two periods of the game.
“We’re not used to playing cities teams. When you play them, you’ve got to play all three periods,” Vesel said. “The second period wasn’t bad, the first period was atrocious and in the third period we came out flying. We’ve got to do that for all three periods.”
Austin was able to keep up with the Tornadoes when both teams were even strength, but Anoka did all of its damage when it had an advantage. Austin’s top scorer Chloe Summerfield also missed some time due to penalties.
“Chloe going into the penalty box for us is not a good thing,” Vesel said. “We’ve got to stay out of the penalty box and not just Chloe, but all of the girls. We’ve got to learn how the referees are going to call it and we’ve got to play accordingly.”
Austin will close out its holiday tournament when it hosts the St. Paul Blades 3:45 p.m. Wednesday in Riverside.
