GLENVILLE — The Lyle/Pacelli football team opened with a dominating 50-14 win over Glenville/Emmons in their season opener on the road Friday.

It didn’t take the Athletics long to show who the better team was when they scored on their first possession, a six play drive that ended in the endzone on a 17-yard run by Nate Williamson for an early 8-0 L/P advantage.

After a four and out for G-E, the Athletics marched the ball 35 yards for a 14-0 lead after Riley Marsolek rumbled in from a yard out. A bit later, L/P’s Cody Meyer record a school record 88-yard punt return for a touchdown and a 20-0 L/P lead.

“We got off to a good start,” L/P head coach Mark Buntje said. “It was a good way to start the year. Nate Williamson and Riley Marsolek both ran well and our line did well for them.”

Trailing 28-0 the Wolverines finally got on the board with less than eight minutes left in the first half when Michael Thofson took a reverse around the right side for a four yard score to make it respectable at 28-6.

But the Athletics weren’t done and went on to score two more times in the first half to take an insurmountable 44-6 lead into the locker room. 

At the start of the third the Wolverines forced a fumble but Meyer was there to scoop up the ball and ran 40 yards to paydirt untouched for a 50-6 L/P lead.

Lyle/Pacelli will host their spirit night entitled “Under the Lights” Friday, Sept. 12th when the Athletics play Grand Meadow at Wescott Field in Austin.

The pre-game tailgate party will start at 5:15 p.m. with hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and pop.

Everyone is invited and the first 250 students to arrive will receive a free blue and green Athletic wrist band.
