The 27-year-old man who was caught wearing another man’s pants was charged Friday.
Darrell Wigham of Austin was charged with two counts of theft. He pleaded not guilty to both counts.
Wigham allegedly greeted a resident Jan. 7, walked past him and proceeded to steal from his apartment.
Austin police officers responded to the 300 block of South Main Street for a theft at about 9:30 a.m. The victim said he was outside smoking a cigarette when Wigham walked up, greeted him and then entered the apartment, according to Police Chief Brian Krueger.
The victim did not know Wigham, and flagged down a woman to notify the police.
When police arrived, they questioned the suspect, who said his grandmother had told him to check on the homeowner.
However, police reportedly found Wigham with a bag of the victim’s clothing, and he was wearing a pair of the victim’s pants, according to Krueger. He also had numerous bankcards, social security cards and other items belonging to the victim. Wigham also had a crowbar and small pliers with him, according to the report.
Wigham was also in court for a shoplifting charge from Jan. 5, and a check forgery charge from Dec. 29, 2015. His next court appearance for the thefts is scheduled for Feb. 24.
