BURNSVILLE — The state has reached an agreement with a landowner to take over an old Burnsville landfill and foot the bill for an estimated $65 million cleanup.
The Star Tribune reports that the agreement, which was finalized this week, means local governments, school districts and businesses won’t have to pay for a costly federal Superfund cleanup.
Instead, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency will clean up Freeway Landfill, located along Interstate 35W south of the Minnesota River, through the state’s Closed Landfill Program. The state will be responsible for cleaning up about 132 acres covered by the landfill, including the approximately 45 acres that the landowner plans to keep.
About 90 acres will go to the state along with some buffer land.
