ROCHESTER – The No. 3 seeded Hayfield girls basketball team wasn’t able to make No. 2 Dover-Eyota spread out it’s defense enough as the Vikings lost 60-48 in the Section 1AA semifinals in Mayo Civic Center Saturday.

The Vikings (20-8 overall) had plenty of open three-point looks, but it hit just three of those shots from deep. The Eagles (23-8 overall) were able to shut down Hayfield’s attack lanes for much of the night as their post players filled up the lane.

“We just didn’t shoot well enough,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said.”It’s a lot of pick your poison [against DE]. You can try to get to the basket or you have to shoot from the outside.”

Hayfield trailed 44-29 in the 46-31 in the second half and it used 12-4 run to get within 48-43 with 4:55 left in the contest. But DE responded by getting a few breakaways to hold off the run.

Sophomore Maggie Streightiff led the Vikings with 21 points and six rebounds.

“It was a really fun experience and we leaned on Rachael [Ausrud] and Savanna [Cordle] a lot this year,” Streightiff said. “We’re really going to miss them next year.”

Hayfield has a young squad that started three sophomores and Kindschy hopes his team will be back in the thick of things next year. The Vikings will look to improve on their shooting and rebounding over the summer.

“We’ll keep knocking on the door and hopefully someone will let us in eventually,” Kindschy said.
