CALLAWAY — Residents evacuated from the small northwestern Minnesota town where a train struck a propane truck can start going home.

A freight train collided with the propane truck in Callaway at about 12:25 p.m. on Thursday. A fire raged for hours as the propane was vented off until shortly after 10 p.m., when an explosion occurred.

The Becker County Sheriff’s Office said Friday morning the fire has been extinguished after Callaway was evacuated. The town of about 230 will be allowed to return around 10 a.m.

It’s still unclear why the propane truck was on the tracks. Canadian Pacific railroad spokesman Andy Cummings says the two crew members were treated and released at a local hospital.

Callaway is about 50 miles east of Fargo, North Dakota.
