Austin Public Schools could soon bid farewell to a longtime employee.

Director of Human Resources Brad Bergstrom has been offered the superintendent position at Thief River Falls Public Schools and is in negotiations with the district’s board, according to the Grand Forks Herald.

Bergstrom hasn’t yet officially accepted the position, but Bergstrom put in his resignation to the Austin Public Schools Board. The board will discuss it at its 5:30 p.m. monthly meeting on Monday in City Council Chambers.

It would be Bergstrom’s first superintendent position. He completed a degree last year in educational leadership and administration from St. Mary’s University in Winona, according to the Grand Forks Herald.

Bergstrom previously served as Austin High School principal before becoming the district’s human resources director in 2013.

That move was in part one of transition. While at first glance the move from principal to human resource directors could have looked like a step down, Bergstrom said in 2013 that the HR position aligned more with natural duties of a superintendent as he trained and gained experience to one day seek a superintendent post.

In other business, the board will hear a tax abatement proposal from City Administrator Craig Clark, along with reports from Superintendent David Krenz, Woodson Elementary School Principal Jessica Cabeen and I.J. Holton Intermediate School Principal Jean McDermott.

The board will also set the district’s 2017-18 calendar.
