The Austin Greyhounds racked up 14 hits, but it wasn’t enough as they lost 6-4 to the Minneapolis Cobras in the Spamtown Challenge in Marcusen Park Saturday.

The Hounds (2-6 overall) trailed 4-0 after two innings, but they made their move when they scored three runs in the third to get within 4-3. Jordan Hart, Matt Cano and Nik Gasner each had a two-out RBI in that frame.

“We had good energy. We just started out slow,” Hounds co-manager John Frein said. “We played right with them and we never felt we were out of it. We were hitting the ball.”

Chris May pitched five strong innings in relief for the Hounds as he allowed just one earned run and struck out five. May, a Southland grad, played baseball at Riverland Community College, then he played football at Winona State University. This spring, he played some club baseball at Winona State University and he was able to find some time to get back on the amateur baseball scene this summer.

“It’s good to be back here in Austin playing baseball,” May said. “I played a little club ball at Winona and Joe [Serratore] has been on me to get out here again.”

Frein said that May has given the Hounds a boost on the mound.

“He pitched well in his last outing too. He made a great play on a ball hit down the third base line with a big throw to first,” Frein said.
