The Historic Paramount Theatre’s summer World Music Series is kicking off a bit later than normal this week.

After the series’ first summer show, the Yves Lambert Trio, was canceled due to visa issues, Krar Collective is set to perform at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Paramount.

“It’s been great,” Austin Area Commission for the Arts Executive Director Jennie Knoebel said. “We’ve seen the audience continually increase as we’ve done the World Music Series.”

The London-based Krar Collective has been described as “The Ethiopian White Stripes,” as the group serves up a colorful feast of mind-blowing Ethiopian grooves.

Led by Temesgen Zeleke, Krar Collective performs a rootsy, yet contemporary take on traditional music from Ethiopia based on other-worldly modes and driven by hypnotic rhythms.

The World Music Series is a partnership with Riverside Concerts out of Rochester to bring their World Music series to Austin for select Wednesdays throughout the summer.

Along with the performances, Knoebel said the World Music Series is typically informative as well, as the musicians often take time to discuss their music and instruments.

Knoebel said the series has been a good partnership and has brought in bands that normally wouldn’t play at the Paramount.

“People love it; we get really great feedback,” she said.
