NORTHFIELD — Police have identified a woman shot and killed in her Northfield home Sunday as Lilly Marie Kirckof.
Kirckof, 61, was shot by a woman in her 70s who also lived in the house, according to Northfield police. Police arrested the alleged shooter — whose identity has not been made public — but later released her.
Authorities on Monday again reassured residents that the public is not in danger.
“I want our community to understand that there’s no danger posed,” Police Chief Monte Nelson said.
Investigators with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension arrived at the house on the 1200 block of Jefferson Road on Sunday night and were collecting evidence Monday. Until all evidence is gathered and reviewed, Nelson said, police won’t publicly speculate on what occurred between the women, who were not related.
The shooting occurred just before 8 a.m. Sunday. According to police scanner traffic captured by mnpoliceclips.com, the older woman called police, saying that “someone was trying to harm her.”
“I’m not sure what’s going on,” dispatch said, “but the caller stated that she shot this person.”
One of the first officers to arrive at the house told dispatch to “tell her to come outside, hands up, nothing in her hand.” The woman told dispatch that she could not step over the body in the bedroom doorway “without falling.” She went on to say that she placed her weapon on the bed and was waiting for police to arrive.
The woman was arrested and escorted to a hospital for evaluation, according to scanner transmissions.
The shooting is the first in Northfield, a city of about 20,000 south of the Twin Cities, in a few years, Nelson said. Since he started with the department two decades ago, “we can literally count on one hand” the number of shootings.
“This type of thing does upset a community of our size,” Nelson said.
