The Austin girls soccer team controlled the ball and the pace as it was able to get past Winona (1-3-1 overall, 0-2-1 Big Nine) 2-1 on the road Tuesday.
The Winhawks scored early on a breakaway, but Austin took over from that point as the Packers had 21 shots and Myia Hoium had to make just two saves in net.
“I was very impressed with the midfield overall,” Austin head coach Jake Levisen said. “They helped the ‘D’ and they were able to push up on the attack. It was both the starters and the reserves. Every midfielder that played did a terrific job.”
Kallie Bumgarner tied the game in the 28th minute when she connected on a shot from outside the 18-yard line and Emily Hegna gave Austin (2-2 overall, 1-1 Big Nine) the lead for good when she broke free and scored with 15 minutes left in the first half.
