LEROY — The Grand Meadow volleyball team was able to hold off an up-start LeRoy-Ostrander squad to pick up a win by scores of 25-16, 27-25, 25-14 in LeRoy Thursday.

The Cardinals (2-9 overall, 2-5 SEC) jumped out to a 10-5 in the first set and they led 6-3 early in the second set, but the Superlarks (12-8 overall, 5-3 SEC) had an answer with some big hitting by senior Brittanie Winfield, who had eight kills, and sophomore Kaitlyn Hilton, who had seven kills and six ace serves.

“They always give us a tough match and it was fun to come out with the win,” GM head coach Tori Burmester said. “We kind of came into this match in a midseason slump and hopefully this gets us going.”

Hilton helped GM put the match away as she went on a 10-point serving run to boost the Larks in the final set. Hilton was able to avoid distractions and stay focused during the run.

“You’ve just go to zone everything out besides Tori and her clipboard,” Hilton said.

GM used a seven point run to take a 15-8 lead in the first set and it was able to out-last the Cardinals in a very competitive second second set. Sophomore Jordyn Glynn, who had six kills, said that the LO match always gets the Larks going.

“They always give us their best game. We have to come out with the mentality that they’re going to play hard, so we have to play harder,” Glynn said. “We were trying to amp up the intensity and work together as a team. It started off rough, but we were able to regroup.”

Haley Olson had five kills for LO, which struggled with consistency in the final set.

“I think we played with them in the first two sets,” LO head coach Shannon Twait said. “Unfortunately we stopped hitting in the third set. They made a lot of plays and served well.”
