Irvin (Don) Bartley, 88, of Austin, Minnesota, died Friday, Oct. 21, 2016, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems Hospital, Austin, Minnesota.
Irvin Don Bartley was born Dec. 5, 1927, in Austin, Minnesota, the son of Jacob and Ethel (Simonds) Bartley. He graduated from Austin High School in the class of 1946 and served in the U.S. Army. After returning to Austin, Don worked for Hormel Foods Corporation, retiring after 39 years. Don married Mavis Sollie on May 27, 1950. After retirement, Don and Mavis spent 22 years wintering in Texas.
He was a long time member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Don had a number of hobbies, including playing golf, walking, dancing, bike riding and working on cars.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Ethel Bartley, brothers Gorward and Dale Bartley, sisters Dorothy Gunderson and Ruth Lady, a daughter-in-law Chrisyne Bartley and grandson Christopher Bartley.
Don is survived by his wife, Mavis Bartley of Austin; sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Luann Bartley of Plymouth, Minnesota, Mike and Bobbe Bartley of Brookings, South Dakota, and Steve Bartley of Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Bill Cheek of Rochester, Minnesota; nine grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Todd Portinga, AiM officiating. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery at a later date. Military Honors will be conducted by Olaf B. Damm Post No. 1216 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Austin Post No. 91 American Legion. Visitation will be at Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday morning for one hour before the service. There will be no reviewal at the church. The family prefers memorials to St. Olaf Lutheran Church or to the Comforcare Good Samaritan Care Center.
