NORTHFIELD — Austin sophomore Abby Lewis didn’t have the finish she was hoping for at the Minnesota Class AA state cross country meet in St. Olaf Saturday, but she’s ready to use it as motivation for the future.

Lewis finished 142nd out of 175 runners with a time of 21:04.8.

“In the first mile I was pretty strong, then after that I think the heat got to me,” Lewis said. “This gives me something to shoot for next season and train for in the offseason.”

Lewis was hoping to finish in closer to the front of the pack, but it was tough for her to make up ground once the field caught up to her.

“It’s definitely hard compared to sections where you’re more spread out,” Lewis said. “Everyone is a really fast and strong runner. It’s good competition.”

Anna Fenske of Farmington won the race with a time of 17:41.5.
