Quality Pork Processors Accounting Manager John Berglund had a simple description when announcing how the company and its workers supported the United Way this year.
“We had a really good year,” he said.
But United Way Executive Diane Baker said ”good” was a bit too modest.
“It was better than good,” she added later. “I would call it great. This is really impressive. We are beyond excited.”
The United Way of Mower County received a big boost in its quest to raise $1.225 million in its 2016-17 campaign to support more than 55 programs in the Austin community.
Quality Pork Processors, traditionally one of the top donations, announced it’s giving $141,000 the campaign, topping last year’s $130,000.
“To me that says that QPP employees value United Way programs, and these guys stepped up in a big way,” Berglund said.
Each year, the United Way holds an annual campaign to support programs that help some of the neediest in Austin. After supporting 55 programs in 2016, Baker expects that number to go up next year.
“We know there are going to be more program requests this year, so this goes a long way in helping a lot of people in this community, so great work,” Baker said.
Berglund praised QPP’s solicitors for their diligent work to engage employees and educate them about the programs the United Way supports.
The United Way focuses those efforts on four areas it sees as fundamental to a well-balanced life: education, income, health and basic needs.

Baker thanked QPP for supporting United Way.
“They get it,” she said. “I think they know that there are people struggling in our community, and they know that they can make a difference and they really did that today.”
