The Austin High School athletic Hall of Fame committee will induct six new grads into the Hall of Fame at halftime of the Austin boys basketball game vs. Albert Lea 7:15 p.m. Jan. 20.

This year’s class includes Tom Berven, class of 1959, Ed Draheim, class of 1960, Bob Motzko, class of 1979, Grant Hagen, class of 1990, Dana Matthews, class of 1992 and Rob Haedt, class of 1993.

Hall of Fame activities continue with a social gathering open to the public in the Commons at AHS 9:30 a.m. Saturday. This is an opportunity to enjoy free coffee, juice and doughnuts while meeting and greeting the inductees and attending Hall of Fame members.

Hall of Fame Weekend concludes with the Saturday luncheon in the Fellowship Hall at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 306 2nd St. NW. The public is invited to attend. Tom Berven, Class of 1959

Tom was a three-year letter winner for the Packer tennis team, and he lettered in basketball. As a junior, he became the first Austin tennis player to qualify for State. He was sectional runner-up in doubles his senior year. Berven also lettered on basketball teams that finished first and third at State.

Berven continued his athletic career at Luther College where he lettered in basketball and tennis. He captained the tennis team his senior year and was the conference No. 1 singles runner-up.

After Luther, Berven, like his father Ove, became an educator and coach at Neenah High School in Wisconsin. Over a 16-year career as JV basketball coach, his record stood at 229-58. Berven’s record as head varsity boys’ tennis coach is even more impressive at 436-49-1 over a 46-year career. His record includes two streaks of more than 100 straight conference wins; 39 conference championships; 30 sectional titles; 5 team state crowns; 6 state runner-up finishes as well as 10 individual state titles. Berven has also served as the Director of the Neenah summer tennis program for 49 years, a program that reached 300,000 total attendance and was the 2000 Wisconsin Tennis Association Organization of the Year.

Berven has received numerous service awards and coaching honors including conference coach of the year, an honor he has received six times. He was the 2007 WHSTCA Coach of the Year and a 2008 National Coach of the Year nominee. Berven also has been a featured speaker and clinician at several tennis coaching clinics. He is already a member of four athletic halls of fame: the Luther College Athletic Hall of Fame; the Fox Valley Tennis Association Hall of Fame; the Neenah Joint School District Hall of Fame; and the Wisconsin Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame.

Berven is retired from teaching but not coaching. He will celebrate his 47th year at the helm of the boys’ tennis team this spring. He has three children and five grandchildren.

Ed Draheim, Class of 1960

Although primarily a reserve on the basketball and baseball teams, Draheim was the leader of the football team as a quarterback. In the absence of state football play-offs, the sports editors of the major metro papers named Austin the “mythical” state champs.

Draheim was a member of the 1958 AHS mythical state championship team and he quarterbacked the 1959 Packer squad to the mythical state title. During his career, Draheim set two long-standing AHS quarterback records: the QB rushing record and the passing completion record of 65 percent.

Draheim played freshman football at Valparaiso University before transferring and graduating from Mankato State University with bachelor and masters degrees in physical education and health.

After several teaching and coaching stops, Draheim settled in Owatonna, where over a 30-year career he coached softball, football, basketball, track and golf at various levels. He started the girls’ fast pitch softball program in 1978 and led the Huskies to ten winning seasons and two appearances in the Region I finals. He was the 1982 Big 9 Coach of the Year.

After seven years as Head B-Squad Football coach, Draheim became Assistant Varsity Coach, a position he held for 21 years. During this time the Huskies won several Big 9 titles and made one appearance at State finishing as runner-up. In 1988 Ed was honored with the Butch Nash Award given to the Minnesota High School Football Assistant Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the Owatonna High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.

Draheim enjoyed a 17-year career officiating basketball including a 9-year stretch as a selected Girls’ State Basketball Tournament Official by the Minnesota State High School League. He was assigned to the Championship game in 1987. Additionally, Draheim authored two published articles and was heavily involved in community and professional organizations.

Draheim is retired. He and his wife Jane live in Owatonna. He has two children and three grandchildren. He and Jane enjoy traveling and spending time at their cabin near Nisswa, Minn.
Bob Motzko, Class of 1979

Motzko lettered in football, baseball and hockey. Former Austin baseball coach Dick Seltz thought Motzko was “extremely coachable and a real team player.”

Motzko played on the 1979 Big 9 Champion baseball team; however, the No. 1 rated Packers failed to advance beyond the district finals, a loss that Motzko says still stings.

Hockey was Motzko’s best sport. The All-Conference player became the Packer’s leading scorer at the time with 21 goals and 20 assists. He was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year. After high school, Motzko played in the United States Hockey League. His 1981 team, the Dubuque Fighting Saints, won the National Championship. Motzko played hockey at St. Cloud State where he was a two-year letter winner. Bob began his hockey coaching career as a student assistant coach at SCSU in 1986-87.

His coaching career includes highly successful stints coaching in the USHL (1989 USHL Coach of the Year and 2000 General Manager of the Year) and at the college level as an assistant with Miami University, the University of Denver and the University of Minnesota, where he was part of two NCAA championship teams in 2002 and 2003. Motzko was named head hockey coach at St. Cloud State University in 2005. Since that time, he has built a solid program and has guided the Huskies to consistent national recognition as a top-20 team.

Motzko has won more than 240 games and was recognized as the 2006 and 2007 WCHA Coach of the Year and the 2014 NCHC Coach of the Year. His Huskies won the 2013 WCHA regular season title and the 2014 NCHC regular season crown. Under Bob’s leadership the Huskies have advanced to the final round of the conference tournament eight times and most recently won the 2016 NCHC Frozen Faceoff title.

On the national stage, Motzko has guided SCSU to seven NCAA tournament bids and to the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four after winning the NCAA Midwest Region. That year Bob was recognized as a finalist for the 2013 Spencer Penrose Division I Coach of the Year. SCSU advanced to the NCAA regional championship game in 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2015 and has earned four consecutive NCAA invites 2013-2016 under Motzko’s leadership. Huskies have earned All-America honors eight times and have been selected as Hobey Baker Award top ten finalists five times during the Motzko era.

Motzko recently coached Team USA to a gold medal win at the IIHF World Junior Championships with a 5-4 overtime win in the title game against Team Canada.

Grant Hagen, Class of 1990

Hagen ran cross country and played basketball, earning three letters but his talent for throwing clearly stood out on the baseball diamond. As a pitcher, the two-year letter winner set two Packer baseball team records, most wins in a season (12) and most complete games (13). He led the Packers to the 1990 Big 9 Title and the Region IAA Title. Grant threw two complete games at state, a 5-0 shutout and a 2-0 loss in the championship game.

Hagen received numerous honors: first team All-Conference; first team All-Region IAA; first team MN Coaches All-State; MN All-Star Game; 1990 Austin Daily Herald Player of the Year; Dick Seltz Team MVP; AHS Pitching Award; multiple KAUS Sportscasters Club Athlete of the Week selections.

Hagen played Division I baseball at Arkansas State University earning three letters. His team won the Sun Belt Conference Championship in 1994 and played in the College World Series Regionals. He and his fellow ASU pitchers had the 5th best ERA of all DI teams in1995.

Hagen lives in Williamsburg, Virginia with his wife and four sons. He serves as the Director of Production Control for Huntington Ingalls Industries, designer and builder of US aircraft carriers, submarines and surface combatants.

Dana Matthews, class of 1992

Matthews played hockey before a school-sponsored program existed in Austin. She played on boys’ teams up through Peewees. Matthews is best known for her exceptional pitching talent. During her four-year softball career, she won over 40 games for the Packers.

Coach Ron Bergstrom thought what set Matthews apart from other pitchers was her ability to throw strikes and to make pitches when she had to. She kept her teammates in games and gave them a chance to win.

Matthews was named to the Big 9 All-Conference Team three times and the All-Region Team two times.

After AHS, Matthews worked for Weyerhaeuser and later for Hormel Foods Corporation.

Matthews’s life was cut short in an accident in 2012.

Rob Haedt, Class of 1993

Haedt was an all-around athlete who participated in track, hockey and football winning a total of ten varsity letters. Haedt racked up multiple honors in each sport.

A four-year track athlete, Haedt earned four All-Conference honors and All-State recognition in 1993. He was the first athlete in Minnesota to medal in four events at the 1993 state track meet. He was an eight-time Big 9 Champion in multiple events. He set the AHS triple jump school record and was a member of the 4×400 school record setting relay team along with Steve Logterman, Alan Slavic and Bob Wagoner. Haedt was also team captain. Haedt was the hockey team’s team captain lettered four years. He was a three-time All-Conference Team selection and was a one-time All-State Honorable mention honoree. The Packers reached the State Hockey Tournament in 1993, the first time in school history.

Haedt was also named to the Hockey State Tournament All-Tourney Team.

Haedt was The team captain on the football team, where he set several Packer rushing records, made the All-Conference Team twice and the All-State Team his senior year.

Among his career highlights was a kick return of 99 yards and a 99 yard run from scrimmage. Haedt played in the 1993 Outstate vs. Metro All-Star Football Game and was named the game’s MVP. He was awarded a full football scholarship to the University of Minnesota.

Haedt lives in Rochester, Minnesota with his wife Kelly (Carney). Their daughter Lauren is a freshman at Iowa Sate and their son Robbie is an 8th grader at Lourdes.
