Riverland drops application fees; $20 fee seen as a barrier to slowing down the process

Beginning Tuesday, Riverland Community College will eliminate its $20 application fee to make it easier for individuals to begin their higher education journey when applying to attend the college.
“We saw the application fee as a barrier we could remove for students because it slowed down the process to get them enrolled in Riverland’s credit-based academic programs,” said Kelly McCalla, interim vice president of academic and student affairs.
“It also is a small thing we can do for first generation, low income students to help them get connected to the college and begin to explore their opportunities” he added.
Application fees are generally not covered by financial aid. Riverland becomes one of eight Minnesota State community colleges that have chosen not to charge application fees.
While not a high fee, it is enough for some students to delay the process.
“With the workforce needs that exist in our communities, Riverland wants to provide access to as many students as possible to consider the high-quality, high-paying career training options we have for students,” McCalla said. “It is also an extension of our commitment to businesses and industries in our region to help build the workforce they need.”
