Think pink in a classic tale

Are you ready to “think pink”?

Kick off Mower County’s Paint the Town Pink celebration to raise funds for breast cancer research at The Hormel Institute by attending Matchbox Children’s Theatre production of “Cinderella” on Jan. 27, 28 and 29.

This is the third time in the history of Matchbox that they will stage “Cinderella.”

The first production was in 1996 at the Frank W. Bridges Theatre at Riverland, directed by Cynthia Lohn. In 2003, it was staged at the Paramount Theatre by director Carrie Parker.

When the show was selected for the 2016-2017 season, Angela Donovan volunteered to direct.

“This was the first Matchbox show that I had been in when I first moved to Austin when we did it in 2003,” Donovan said.  “I had so much fun playing the role of the older sister. I knew if we ever did the show again I would want to direct and put my own spin on it.”

Part of Donovan’s spin is connecting the show with Paint the Town Pink. Cinderella’s costumes and the set will feature pink. After each performance, audience members can come up on stage and take a photo with Cinderella, the prince, and her carriage for a donation ($1 suggested) to The Hormel Institute.

Watch for a special connection in the casting. The youngest cast member (age 9) is serving maid Kalli Potter. The oldest cast member is Kalli’s mother, Kim Potter.

The play is one hour with no intermission, making it appropriate for attendance by small children.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for youth. Check the Matchbox web site at www.matchboxchildrenstheatre.org/ for special pricing for season tickets and groups.

You can also get a ticket at the ArtWorks Center at 300 N Main Street (10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday) or at the Paramount Theatre box office an hour before each performance.
