The Hayfield girls basketball team made a big comeback, but it fell short when Goodhue’s McKenzie Ryan hit a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer. The Wildcats (17-3 overall, 9-2 HVL), who are ranked No. 2 in Class ‘A’ walked away with a 49-46 victory in Hayfield Friday.
The Vikings (16-4 overall, 10-2 HVL) led 8-0 early, but Goodhue rallied to take a 13-point lead in the second half when Megan Ryan hit three straight three-pointers. Hayfield eventually tied the game at 46 when Kate Kruger connected on a three-pointer with 36.6 seconds left, but it was never able to get the ball back.
“It was nice to see the comeback. It was a really good game and somebody had to lose,” Hayfield co-head coach Kasey Krekling said.
Olivia Matti had 18 points and 14 rebounds for Hayfield, which is still in position to win the HVL Blue Division if it can win its last four conference games this season.
