After being held under 50 points in two straight losses, the Austin girls basketball team regained its offensive confidence as it beat Rochester Century 64-51 in Ove Berven Gym Thursday.

After jumping out to an 11-3 lead after a Colie Justice three-pointer six minutes into the first half, the Packers (11-10 overall, 8-9 Big Nine) hit a minor shooting slump as they led just 11-10 with 9:01 left in the half. Austin responded in a big way as Abby Lewis, who had 16 points, hit back-to-back threes and Elyse Hebrink scored on a put-back to put Austin up 22-13.

The Panthers (2-19 overall, 2-15 Big Nine) couldn’t get closer than seven the rest of the way and Austin led by as many as 17 in the second half.

“It’s great to see some shots fall for us finally,” Austin head coach Anna Meyer said. “It gets frustrating when you can’t make shots and you’re expecting them to play super tough defense. When we show up and we’re moving and we’re flying all over the ball, that’s when we’re playing our best basketball.”

Austin senior Amber Hansen provided an all-around effort as she had seven points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals.

“It felt pretty good to get out of this slump,” Hansen said. “If you’re struggling on offense, you have to pick it up on defense and the boards.”

Awenia Nywesh had 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists in the win. She said the team was able to turn around it’s attitude during Wednesday’s practice.

“Yesterday in practice we did a lot of shooting drills and we were kind of having fun and getting loose,” she said. “Tonight we worked together as a team and moved the ball.”

Austin senior Rebecca Younis had two points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
