The Austin area could be in for a roller coaster week of weather.

Residents may need to unpack the mittens, hats and shovels by Thursday and Friday as The National Weather Service is watching a “potentially potent” winter storm for late this week.

This week’s weather is beginning with a high near 58 degrees on a rainy Monday that could bring isolated thunderstorms. The weather service was warning the runoff from Monday’s rain, along with recent snow melt, could result in rises on area rivers and streams. With the ground largely still frozen, rivers and streams could see more water than normal from runoff.

After highs near 60 on Tuesday and Wednesday, it could be back to reality on Thursday.  The weather service is watching a possible winter storm slated to move across the region Thursday night through Friday night. While details are uncertain, this could be a high impact storm with periods of rain and snow along with strong winds, the weather service said.

However, it’s still very early to be tracking the system, and more details and predictions will come in the next few days.
