A routine traffic stop in Racine Township last month uncovered more than a half-pound of marijuana.

Christopher Phillip Orke, 23, was scheduled to appear in Mower County District Court Thursday on charges of felony fifth-degree degree drug possession, a misdemeanor for possessing more than 1.4 grams or marijuana in a motor vehicle and a petty misdemeanor for speeding.

According to court records, a Minnesota State Patrol trooper clocked a 2007 Mazda 3 driving 65 mph in a 55 mph zone on Highway 63 just before 6 p.m. on Feb. 23.

The trooper pulled over the Mazda 3 at the 320th Street intersection and immediately smelled marijuana when Orke, the driver, rolled down the driver’s window.

When asked if he had marijuana, Orke turned over a Crown Royal bag with 12.2 grams of marijuana. He then told an officer he had more marijuana in a backpack in the back seat.

The trooper found about 250 grams —  more than half a pound — of marijuana in the backpack.

Orke was arrested and taken to the Mower County Jail.
