Errors catch up to Packers in loss to Falcons

The Austin baseball team struggled with multiple miscues as it lost 8-6 to Faribault in Seltz Field Tuesday.

All eight of Faribault’s runs were unearned and the Falcons (3-2 overall, 1-1 Big Nine) were able to add three runs in the sixth to go up 7-3 after an Austin throwing error opened the door for a rally.  Austin committed six errors in the loss after having just one miscue in its first two games combined.

“Any time you put six errors up on the board, your chances of winning aren’t very good,” Austin head coach Joe Kroc said. “If we just pick up the ball and make a throw or make a play [the outcome could be different].”

Austin (1-2 overall, 1-1 Big Nine) was able to make things interesting in the bottom of the seventh when Hunter Guyette and Phillip Zynda had back-to-back two-out RBI singles to make it an 8-6 game.

Pete Conner flew out to center field with runners on first and second to end Austin’s comeback.

Zynda and Guyette each went two-for-four with two RBIs, and Riley Wempner went two-for-four, but Austin had just one hit from the rest of its lineup.

Josi Bothun took the loss after allowing zero earned runs and striking out five in five innings.

“I thought offensively our approaches weren’t there and we went back a step,” Kroc said. “We’ve got to rebound on Thursday and play better, because we’ll be facing a good Winona team.”

The Packers have a busy week ahead of them will host Winona 5 p.m. Thursday and they will take on Alexandria in USBank Stadium 1:45 p.m. Friday. Austin will host Northfield in a doubleheader noon Saturday.
