HAYFIELD — The Hayfield softball team was able to pick up some much needed momentum in a 14-4 win over Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in Hayfield Monday.

The Vikings (3-2 overall) had a season’s high run total Monday after being outscored 28-10 in losses to Kasson-Mantorville and Randolph last week. Hayfield has now won two straight games after that two-game skid.

“After those losses to Randolph and Kasson, we needed this one to reassure us,” said Hayfield junior Kyal Heydt.

JWP (2-3 overall) took an early 3-1 lead on Hayfield after it connected on back-to-back homers in the top of the third inning, but the Vikings bounced back big time in the third and fourth innings. Hayfield scored six runs in the third as Jacie Gustine had a key two-out, two-run single and Hayfield scored five runs in the fourth when Olivia Matti, Maggie Streightiff and Gustine each had an RBI.

Streightiff finished with a homer and three RBIs in the win, and Heydt went three-for-four with a double. Heydt is slowly regaining her swing after missing last season with a knee injury.

“I still wish my swing was better, but my fielding is there,” Heydt said. “I don’t to hit as much because we have a lot of power hitters.”

Heydt was a standout shortstop for the Vikings when they went to state during her freshman year, but last year she was on the sideline as Hayfield advanced to its second straight state tournament. This season Heydt has moved over to second base and she’s making the most of her time back in the lineup.

“It’s been great. I missed it so much,” Heydt said. “Last year it was fun watching them go to state, but it’s more exciting to play.”
