ALBERT LEA — John Kluever resigned as Freeborn County administrator Tuesday, the morning after he was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated in Albert Lea.

The Freeborn County Board of Commissioners accepted the resignation letter Kluever submitted after entering closed session Tuesday during the board’s meeting.

Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Kluever, 59, for fourth-degree DWI after a report of a drunken driver was made at 8:11 p.m. Monday at 501 W. Richway Drive, near Brookside Park. He has not yet appeared in court on the charge.

Commissioners appointed Freeborn County Recorder Kelly Callahan as acting county administrator, pending the hire of a county administrator. He oversaw Tuesday’s board meeting.

After the meeting, District 5 Commissioner Mike Lee thanked Kluever for his time spent in Freeborn County.

“I wish him well and the best for the future,” he said.

Kluever was placed on administrative leave for two weeks in March 2016 after the board conducted a review of his performance in a closed meeting.

Kluever, who was hired for the position in 2007, was previously the grants manager in Laramie County, Wyoming, where he had worked since 2001. He also worked as the director of education at Frontier Correctional Systems, a program that offers education programs to court-ordered offenders.
