Double effort on the mound for Blue Sox

The Blue Sox were firing on all cylinders in a 7-1 victory over Marshall Sunday at Marcusen Park in an amateur baseball game.
Austin (13-13 overall) got solid performances from two pitchers and it’s hitters came through when it counted in the win.
Sean Breslin started the game, but after striking out eight in four innings he had to leave due to a work schedule. Reliever Brady Banse struck out seven and allowed just one run in the last five innings.
“Our pitchers are throwing strikes and not walking anybody,” Blue Sox manager Josh Kunze said. “Those are key elements to any starting or relief pitching roles. When we tell the guys to go out and take the ball, the number one thing is to limit the number of guys on base.”
The Blue Sox took a commanding 5-0 lead in the fifth when Dan Swift, who had 4 RBIs on the day, roped a two-run single into right field. Austin scored another run on a throwing error by Marshall on a bunt single by Nate Johnson.
After getting three hits and a run on a Swift single in the first inning off of Marshall starter Aaron Lindstrom, the Blue Sox managed just two hits over the next three innings before their fifth inning rally.
“We tried to buy our time a little to get a feel of how the first guy was throwing and we finally got to him in the fifth inning,” Kunze said.
Austin scored two more in the sixth on a wild pitch and a two-out run-scoring infield single by Andy Swank — who made his return to the lineup after a week of absence. Swank also beat out a bunt hit in the third and he finished 3-for-4 with two runs.
“Having Andy Swank on and off the field is big,” Kunze said. “He’s a leader and when he goes well, the Blue Sox go well. It’s no secret that he’s a big cog in our wheel.”
Although he knew he would be pitching, it took Banse a little while to adjust to the Athletics’ lineup as he had two walks in his first inning of work, and he allowed two hits, a walk and a run in the sixth inning. But over the last three innings, the only Marshall hitter to get on base, reached on a Blue Sox throwing error.
“I’m used to coming in relief, but as a starter you usually don’t want to do that. But you gotta do what you gotta do,” Banse said. “The first couple of innings were a little rough, but I settled down after that.”
The Blue Sox have a big showdown with the Austin Greyhounds Friday at Marcusen Park before they get ready for the postseason, which starts Aug. 3.
