‘Singing ranger’ coming to HHH; McGuire to lead Peace Garden concert, songwriting workshop

Folk great Pete Seeger once wrote to fellow minstrel Charlie McGuire: “I hope you keep on writing. Really, your songs are damn good and so are you.”
Austin folks will get a chance to hear what Seeger was talking about, when McGuire is featured in the first of 10 Peace Garden Concerts, at the Hormel Historic Home on Monday. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m.
McGuire, often called the “Singing Ranger” due to his love of parks and nature, will present “Gripping Tales of Minnesota.” He will tell stories about his favorite state and sing his songs, as often heard on “A Prairie Home Companion,” and during concerts and festivals.
Austinites will get a special treat: They will hear a song written by McGuire earlier in the day with those attending a songwriting workshop at the HHH.
The song will be geared toward happenings from Austin’s past. The workshop will be held from 2 to 3 p.m.
Although from New York, McGuire moved to Minnesota many years ago and has written many songs about its history and natural wonders.
McGuire will be a good fit for the natural beauty of the gardens, where the free concerts have been held since 2010. McGuire last appeared here in 2014.
Concert-goers are asked to bring a lawn chair with them. The concerts come free of charge, thanks to the generosity of MarySue Hormel Harris.
