An Austin man is in custody for allegedly fleeing police and dumping cocaine after a traffic stop on Sunday.
According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, officers pulled over a gold 2000 Mercury Marquis in the 300 block of 27th Avenue Southwest at 4:51 p.m. on Sunday. The driver, Alvin Leon Chambers, 29, who had outstanding warrants in Mower and Olmsted Counties, fled from the vehicle on foot.
During the ensuing foot chase, Chambers fell and allegedly reached into his pocket before throwing something out. He continued to run, but officers were able to subdue him with a Taser and take him into custody.
Officers located six baggies, the contents of which tested positive for cocaine. In total, officers found 8.53 grams of cocaine.
Gold Cross was called to the scene and examined Chambers, who was complaining of shortness of breath. After examining him and removing the Taser probes, they cleared him. Chambers was then taken to Mower County Jail.
