Owatonna resident John Muellerleile was awarded The City Purchase Award for his painting “E Pluribus Unum,” which features a bald eagle with the backdrop of an American flag.

Muellerleile said the painting’s meaning — “out of many, one” — represents the U.S.’s design, in which many communities and states coalesce into one nation.

“I think it’s a great tribute for what you do here,” Muellerleile said at the Austin City Council meeting July 7. “It’s a great honor for me, and thank you very, very much.”

Muellerleile’s work was a digital on canvas, and was chosen among entries at the Austin Art Center.

According to city administrative assistant Jeanne Howatt, his piece will remain at the art center until the month’s end before it’s put on display at City Hall.

The City Purchase Award has taken place annually since 1988. Muellerleile received $500 for the honor.
