An Austin man with a gunshot wound to the leg pleaded not guilty to felony drug charges after police to search his home.

Police reported finding 296.5 grams of methamphetamine — an estimated street value of $20,000 — in his home on the 800 block of Second Avenue Southwest.

Jesus Alejandro Ybarra, 23, pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree drug possession of 50 or more grams of methamphetamine in Mower County District Court on Thursday.

According to court documents, police responded to the shooting incident at 12:58 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, and found Ybarra had been shot just below the left  kneecap.

Ybarra was treated at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Austin, where he refused to talk to police and demanded an attorney. He was later moved to Mayo Clinic Hospital Rochester, Saint Marys Campus for surgery

Police then executed search warrants on Ybarra’s residence. Inside the residence were two women, a man and three children. One of the women said she heard the gunshots and found Ybarra shot outside.

When an officer asked her if there was contraband in the house, she hesitated and then admitted there were drugs in a “peace sign bag.”

The bag contained the 296.5 grams of meth and 45 grams of marijuana, police report.

The man in the residence, Nicholas Joseph Ammesmaki, was arrested when police learned he had outstanding warrants.

Police searched a second house in the 800 block, where they found a Stevens Model 12 gauge shotgun with ammunition similar to shotgun casings found at the scene. They also found several cell phones, eight rifle rounds, a .45 caliber pistol round and two Zolpidem pills, police said.

An officer then drove to Saint Mary’s because Ybarra said he wanted to speak to him. The officer informed Ybarra that he was under arrest for drug possession. Ybarra told the officer he was “cool” with the neighbors in the other residence searched by police. He also said a vehicle, possible a Chevrolet Impala, drove around the corner and he believed the occupant shot him, the report said.

Police said he acknowledged the drugs were his.

Ybarra is scheduled to appear in court for a pre-trial on Dec. 29.
