Football: Awesome Blossoms use big plays to beat Rebels

The Blooming Prairie football team came up with some big plays as it beat Southland 37-14 in Adams in a season opener for both teams Friday.

Gabe Hagen hauled in a first quarter 75-yard TD pass from Seth Peterson, who threw for 269 yards and four scores, to put BP up 12-0 and the Awesome Blossoms (1-0 overall) held a 30-6 lead at halftime. Max Romeo had a 40 yard interception return for a TD and Tim Wolf hauled in a 56 yard TD from Peterson to add to the damage for BP.

“I thought in the first half we played extremely well,” BP head coach Chad Gimbel said. “In the second half we had a little bit of a let-down physically and emotionally, but we had a good lead to start with. We’ve just got to sustain that.”

The Rebels ran for 291 yards as a team and sophomore Carter Schmitz had 119 yards and a TD on the ground. Southland head coach Shawn Kennedy said he was hoping the Rebels could get more pass pressure on Peterson.

“I was very impressed with [BP’s] offensive line,” Kennedy said. “We didn’t play near as physical on defense like we needed too. Their quarterback was able to stand back there and pick us apart.”
