We are looking for some of your volunteer time.

Formerly the United Way Day of Caring, this year the Mower County Senior Center will be taking over the projects on senior day.

Seniors are requesting projects to be done in a two to four hour time span. All projects will be outside the home such as washing windows, raking, cleaning gardens, trimming bushes etc. The homeowner is required to provide the necessary supplies required to get the projects completed.

Helping seniors get these projects done helps keep them independent and allow them to remain in their own homes longer preventing them from slips, trips and falls. We are looking for volunteers to team up and get these projects done for our friends and neighbors.

Our community has a high concentration of seniors. Our goal is to keep them in their own homes as long as possible. We all agree this is where we would like to age. By helping our seniors with these odd jobs they can no longer do themselves we can prolong their independence and thus keep them out of an institution.

The senior center has programs that function all year round to continue to serve seniors in their own home to keep up this independence. Volunteering to help a senior with these projects you are keeping them and their environment safe for them.

If you are interested in volunteering to help a senior with a project you can sign up by stopping down to the senior center or by calling Mary at the chore program at 481-3333. You will be happy you did.

Historical society presentation

Thursday is the next historical presentation. John Haymond will be talking about the Wounded Knee Massacre.

Resistant to government regulated reservations, the Sioux retreated into the Black Hills until a final massacre at Wounded Knee. On December 29, 1890, the massacre of Sioux warriors, women and children along Wounded Knee Creek in southwestern South Dakota marked the final chapter in the long war between the United States and the Native American tribes indigenous to the Great Plains.
