Joshua Robert Drabek, 28, of Owatonna, pleaded guilty on Friday in Mower County District Court to felony check forgery-make or alter checks as part of a plea agreement. Charges of felony vehicle theft, felony check forgery-offer with intent to defraud, and misdemeanor driving after revocation of his license will be dropped at the sentencing.
An Austin Police officer stopped Drabek on July 26 in the 500 block of Highway 218 South while he was driving a 2005 Ford Freestyle. While searching the vehicle, officers found a previously cashed check for Walmart in Drabek’s backpack. The check was written for $275 and was from an account that did not belong to him.
Police contacted the check’s owner, who told them that no one had permission to write the check.
In Minnesota, felony check forgery-make or alter checks carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine if the value of the check is more than $250 but less than $2,500.
Drabek will be sentenced on Feb. 1.
