The demolition process of the former Austin Utilities building on Fourth Avenue Northeast is scheduled to begin Monday.
Austin Utilities reviewed bids from prospective contractors in early December. Landwehr Construction in St. Cloud was awarded the contract.
Landwehr will start with abatements on Monday, beginning with the screen house on Mill Pond, according to AU Energy Resources and Utility Operations Director Alex Bumgardner.
A security fence will also be going up around the building’s perimeter next week.
Landwehr started bringing equipment to the site on Thursday.
“The focus will be the exterior buildings first, then the main power plant and stacks last,” Bumgardner said. “We estimate that the whole process, based on what we have in the contract, will have a completion date of June 30.”
Included in Landwehr’s contract is an agreement to do the excavation and civil work to prepare the site for the construction of the new recreational center.
“They will do the work to make that site environmentally and geotechnically ready so the recreation center construction can get started as soon as possible,” Bumgardner said.
Bumgardner warned residents to be aware of the demolition site.
“There is going to be a lot of construction activity and a lot trucks coming in and out,” he said.
